Searching for what we needFinding what you want is an important skill for students to master. Once they have the ability to find the resources that they need for class work or for personal enjoyment, they gain control over their learning and set themselves up to be successful in life.
Students will learn about using the online card catalog to search for what they want to learn more about and then students will use their knowledge of call numbers to locate the appropriate resources in the Parkway Library. |

Magazines
The Parkway Library has many magazines available for teachers and students. The 3rd grade classes are delving into the magazines and identifying what each magazine is about. In pairs, students reviewed a magazine and recorded information to share with their classmates. Next week, each student pair will present their magazine to their class.
Magazines provide a rich source of authentic material and can be motivating to students of all reading abilities. They help develop language, introduce topics in a variety of ways (i.e. text, pictures, diagrams, games and activities) and appeal to students of all ages. The Parkway library has a collection of magazines, covering a variety of topics: |

Almanac wizards
The previous week we spent some time looking at the Children's Almanac. Students had time to find fun and interesting facts about any subject of interest. Then, they created a question for their fellow classmates to answer. I compiled all the student-generated questions into a single sheet and then students competed to find the answers efficiently (by using the Table of Contents and/or the Index) and accurately. Here are the "Almanac Wizards":
reference resource - Almanac
We are exploring the World Almanac for Children in library. Almanacs contain lots of cool facts and figures about many, many interesting topics.
Find out these answers and many, many more by picking up an almanac! You can also visit the REFERENCE page and find lots of online almanacs. |

Independence in the library
We are working hard to be independent in the library. This means that students can use the online card catalog to locate the reading material of their choice AND locate it on the shelf.
The organization of the Parkway Library is similar to public libraries. Fiction is arranged alphabetically by author's last name and non-fiction is arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System. So, once students master finding materials within their school library, they are well on their way to finding what they like to read at their local public library too.

So, once students master finding materials within their school library, they are well on their way to finding what they like to read at their local public library too.
The skills we are working on are:
- using the appropriate type of search: search by title, author, subject (students can search for a genre with the subject search) and keyword.
- identifying the call number within their computer search (as well as identifying if the resource is available or already checked out)
- locating resources within the library using the call number
- this includes knowing where fiction (call number starts with FIC), everybody (call number starts with E) and reader (call number starts with R) books are located
- this includes locating a resource within the fiction section of the library by using ALPHA order (fiction resources, which include books with call numbers that start with FIC and R and E, are arranged in alphabetical order by author's last name)
book selection --- online search
Students explored using Destiny, the school's online card catalog. Students searched for their next great read using the computer!
Remember to ask your child what they are reading and what GENRE the book is from. Is it mystery, fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fairy tale or nonfiction?
Genre is a particular type or category of literature. The students completed a "Reading Interest" form and let us know what genres, or types, of books that they like to read. This will help as we had new books to the library collection.
